Tasman Peninsula and South East Tasmania Map - Travel Directory - Click for more travel info. The Tasman Peninsula is well known for its spectacular coastal scenery, flora and fauna and the imposing geological features. It is of course best known for the Port Arthur Historic Site. George Arthur first established a prison at Port Arthur to deal with thieves. The prison was built 100 kilometres from Hobart, on a peninsula that was reached by a narrow stretch of land named Eaglehawk Neck. Because of the geography of the area it was an easy place to guard with soldiers and dogs. Port Arthur was founded in 1830 and was a convict prison. It was finally closed in the 1880's. Discipline was strict. Many convicts were taught jobs. The prisoners often had to do hard labour wearing chains. This was to stop them escaping. If a convict tried to escape, hurt the guards or killed one of his cell mates, he would be hanged or flogged with the cat of nine tails. Solitary confinement was also another form of punishment used. Bad behaviour was harshly punished. Good behaviour was rewarded. In 1833 about one third of the convicts were freed for good behaviour. As well as Port Arthur there are many other things to do and see on the Tasman Peninsula. Eaglehawk Neck is a good place from which too see the beautiful coastal rock formations of the Blowhole, Devils Kitchen, Tasmans Arch, Tessellated Pavement and Waterfall Bay. Just to the east of Eaglehawk Neck is the Tasmanian Devil Park. East again are the remains of penal outstations and the Coal Mines Station. To the south of the Tasman Peninsula is Remarkable Cave and the Tasman National Park. The walks in the National Park are spectacular and well worth the exertion. Accommodation in the area ranges from self contained cabins to up market establishments.
