Strahan and West Coast Tasmania Map - Travel Directory - Click for more travel info.Strahan and the West Coast of Tasmania is one of Australia's loneliest and most isolated places. It is the gateway to the World Heritage area Franklin - Gordon National park. Strahan is the tourism centre of the west coast and offers a great deal of activities. People from all over the world come to take day or longer cruise into Macquarie Harbour and up into the Gordon River to see the pristine temperate rainforests. Helicopter and air trips are also available of the same areas. A must see and do is the West Coast Wilderness Railway. This is a fully restored railway which carried ore and supplies between the wharves at Strahan and the Queenstown mine from 1896 till 1963. It runs through some of the most rugged terrain possible deep in the rainforest and uses the rack and pinion ABT third rail system to traverse the gorges and harsh inclines of the system. Fishing, walking and observing the local flora and fauna are popular activities. The area is steeped in history from the first inhabitants, the convicts of Sarah Island to those whom came later the huon piners and miners at Queenstown. An hour's drive north of Strahan is Queenstown which has been mined continuously for other one hundred years. The landscape around Queenstown is alien being almost completely devoid of vegetation as a result of extensive clearing of the forest to feed the mines smelters in the past. This clearing allowed the top soil to wash away in the areas high rainfall. One local said "that's Mt Lyell if we can't see it we know its raining if we can see it we know it's going to rain soon'. The nearby town of Zeehan has the West Coast Pioneers Museum which houses artefcats and machinery from a different age. A time when the mining in the area contributed to over half of Tasmania's economy Accommodation is readily available on the West Coast from cabin parks to luxury boutique lodges. Because it is so popular it can be almost impossible to find accommodation is peak periods. This is especially true of Strahan. Book early. The west coast is remote so you should plan on staying a minimum of two nights to ensure you can see as much as possible.
