It is the major commercial centre of the region and it also hosts the main fishing port. The town of Stanley sits below a rocky outcrop called 'The Nut' which is actually an ancient volcanic plug. It has been declared an historic town. The Nut is a state reserve which is visited by migratory birds. It is also home to a colony of fairy penguins. Popular activities include climbing The Nut, local arts and crafts as well as sampling fine local produce. South east of Stanley is Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park, part of the World Heritage Area. This area is one the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. It is also the starting point for a 6 day walk called the Overland Track which will take you through some of most pristine mountain country in the world. You will not be disappointed if you visit Cradle-Mt - Lake St Clair National Park. To the west of Stanley is Woolnorth Station. The Van Diemens Land Company was formed under charter from King George in 1824 and operates Woolnorth. Guided tours of the property are available where you can see Cape Grim and breathe the cleanest air in the world, the wind farm with 37 generators as well as the properties historic buildings. Also in the area is the Dismal Swamp a giant sinkhole with a blackwood forest and natural swamp on the floor. You can ride a slide or walk to the bottom of the sinkhole and view the unique flora and fauna that lives there. On the northwest coast is the Arthur River. Here you can take a cruise on the Arthur River. The river is pristine and one of best in Tasmania as it has never been logged nor had a hot fire through it in the last few hundred years. Accommodation is readily available in the Stanley region, book early though to avoid disappointment.
