East Coast Freycinet and Bicheno Tasmania Map - Travel Directory - Click for more travel info.At the southern most extent of the East Coast Bicheno and St Helens region is the Freycinet Peninsula. Much of the peninsula is covered by Freycinet National Park. The peninsula itself is surrounded by perfect azure seas, white beaches and imposing pink granite cliffs. The township of Coles Bay is your base to explore this area. There is a wide range of activities from walking, try the walk to Wineglass Bay, eco-tours and cruises. Sea kayaking is a perfect way to explore the peninsula. Several companies organise and guide sea kayak tours. For those who are a little less energetic there are a number of cruises which showcase the peninsula. The peninsula also boats Wineglass Bay. Wineglass Bay was named one of Frommer's favourite beaches in May, 2006. To the north of the Freycinet Peninsula is the pretty seaside town of Bicheno. Bicheno is renowned for its wide range of accommodation choices. The perfect ocean and attractive and safe beaches mean that Bicheno is popular with locals and visitors alike as a holiday destination. Other activities in Bicheno include excellent fishing, very good walks and fairy penguin viewings between November and March at dusk North of Bicheno is the inland town of St Marys and the coastal town of Scamander. These towns also bound the Douglas Aspley National Park. St Marys is a tiny town of just under 600 people and lies at the junction of the Tasman and Esk highways. The area around the town used to have over 50 dairy farms but today there are none. The main activities are the production of wool and meat. There are few tourist attractions excepting nearby coastal views such as from Elephant Pass, convict ruins and quality crafts. There is also a railway museum. There are a number of wineries in the region producing top quality Tasmanian Wines. Most have cellar door wine tastings and sales. Because the region is popular with locals and tourists alike it is important to book accommodation well in advance. In particular Coles Bay and Bicheno have large population increases over the summer months and holiday periods
