Devonport is situated on the mouth of the Mersey River and is referred to as the Gateway to Tasmania being the home port for the Spirit of Tasmania Bass Strait ferry service.

Stretching west along the coast from Devonport to Stanley is a major farming area. Many consider this area produces the finest vegetable and dairy produce in Australia.

There are many popular touring routes that start at Devonport. Many of these have a distinctly adventure feel such as Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park, Walls of Jerusalem and Rocky Cape National Park.

Travellers are well catered for in Devonport with a wide range of accommodation and activities available. Just inland from Devonport are the towns of Sheffield and Deloraine which provide a broad range of options for accommodation and activites as well as the chance to sample fine local food, arts and crafts.

Travelling along the coastal highway from Devonport we come to Ulverstone which is located at the mouth of the Leven River. Ulverstone is a popular tourist town where swimming and fishing are popular activities. Penguins can be viewed at nearby Leith from November to March each evening.

Further west we come to the pretty seaside resort town of Penguin. It was named after the areas resident fairy penguins by botanist Robert Campbell Gunn. The fairy penguins can be seen arriving in the evening between November and March.

The next stop on the highway is the industrial town of Burnie. In years gone by it had less to offer travellers but in recent times it has undergone something of a transformation by turning industry into an art form. The Lactos Cheese Tasting Centre and The Burnie Regional Art Gallery are well worth a visit.

There is a walking track beside the river for those early morning or evening walks. If you are so inclined the fishing in the rivers is good.

3 magnificently refurbished 2 bedroom historic cottages which are the perfect location for honeymooners or romatics but suitable for families.

They are a ten minute walk from the CDB and are rated 4 star by the Tourism Council. The cottages are:

  • Rosalie. Built c 1883 and  National Trust Classified. This is a weatherboard workmen's cottage.
  • Platypus Creek  Built c 1897 and National Trust Classified, lies in native bushland.
  • Turton. c 1890 Weatherboard workme, in the historic area of Devonport.
  • Princess Mary. Built c 1888 and is a 2 storey, three bedroom home with beautiful Mersey River views in the centre of Devonport.
