Derwent Valley Tasmania Map - Travel Directory - Click for more travel info.

To the west of Hobart and southwest of Launceston is the Derwent Valley area. It roughly follows the Derwent River up it's valley to the start of the West Coast region. The Lyell Highway, to the west coast, follows the Derwent and is known as the 'Rivers Run'

Heading west from Hobart your first stop should be New Norfolk. New Norfolk is an historic town with a fine collection of historic buildings as well as boating, canoeing, rafting and fishing on the Derwent.

Further west is Mt Field National Park. The park has good walks and cross country skiing in the winter. Nearby is the Valley of The Styx which contains the worlds tallest hardwoods. These trees can can grow to over 95 metres high and over 400 years old. Pickup a directions brochure before going as you will need to know where to stop and walk into into the forest.

There are a number of golf courses in the area. Bothwell has the oldest golf course in Australia and also is the home of the Australasian Golf Museum.

South of the highway you will find Lake Pedder, the Gordon Dam and the South West Wilderness World Heritage Area. If you choose to take the turnoff to Lake Pedder you will be amazed by the contrast, gone are the rolling hills and pastures replaced by tall timbered forest which eventually opens up into large open button grass plains. Ancient peaks surround you. Soon you will come to the peaceful waters of Lake Pedder which reputedly is home to the worlds largest brown trout.

Accommodation varies in the area from cabins to luxury lodges. The area is relatively remote and also has few major centres so there is not as much accommodation available as there is in the other regions of Tasmania.
