To the northwest of Hobart and southwest of Launceston is the central highlands area. It is a rugged part of Tasmania and credit must be given to the original settlers and the conditions they endured.

The central highlands is known as the 'Heart of Tasmania" and is a diverse region of rugged highlands and lakes, hopfields and historic towns. The areas streams and rivers are fed by the purest rain on earth which in turn replenish the many lakes in the area.

The area is renowned for its trout fishing and natural delights. The region is bordered to the east and north by the snow capped peaks of the Great Western Tiers.

Lake St Clair is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The scenery around Lake St Clair is spectacular. You can take a ferry ride to the head of the lake and walk into the National Park. You could also try your luck for trout with a lure or fly.

Another popular destination is Liffey Falls located in the north of the region. The falls are nestled in cool temperate rainforest. The Liffey Falls State Reserve was included in the Tasmanian World Heritage Area in 1984. This recognises the glbal value of the region

To the west of the region is the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. The park in not accessible by car and is recommended for experienced walkers only. This area is high country, mountainous, covered with dense forest and subject to inclement weather. The views across the ranges and lakes are spectacular from here. It is strongly recommended that you only enter this area with an experienced guide

There are a number of golf courses in the region. Bothwell has the oldest golf course in Australia and also is the home of the Australasian Golf Museum.

Accommodation varies in the area from cabins to luxury lodges. Because of the relative remoteness of the area and the sprseness of major population centres there tends to be a little less choice than other areas of Tasmania so it is best to book early.
